Beetroots have a lot of health benefits since they are full with calcium, iron, potassium, vitamin and protein. But did you know that they can also have some side effects?

First of all, here are the health benefits that you can gain from consuming beetroots.

1. Cancer fighting ingredient

Some studies have shown that since beets contain high levels of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents, it can reduce the risk of some cancers. Another argument is that, the betacyanin, a plant pigment that causes beetroots to be red, can help in defending the cells against harmful carcinogens.

2. Decreases the risk of heart disease

Beetroots contain another two nutrients which are very helpful in decreasing the risk of heart disease – betaine and folate. Actually, combined together, they can help lower blood levels of homocysteine, which can normally increase the risk of heart disease by causing artery-damaging inflammation.

3. Good for the eyes

Beet greens contain an antioxidant called lutein which can help in protecting your eyes from cataracts and macular degeneration related to aging.  They can also help improve the nerve tissue and overall health of your eyes because they contain a wide variety of phytochemicals.

4. Better endurance

Some study conducted in Britain showed that athletes who drank juice of beetroot mixed with apple before their workout, had not only better endurance, but also a lower resting blood pressure than those who didn’t. This might be due to the nitrates found in the root.

5. Decreases the risk from dementia

Beetroot can help older people reduce the risk from dementia because it produces nitric acid, which helps increase blood flow throughout their entire body, including to their brain.

6. Beets relieve constipation

Beets are rich with fiber, that make the digestive system function normally, which is why beets are good if you have constipation.

Now, here are some of the side effects of consuming beetroot: 

1. Beets cause kidney stones

Those prone to obtaining kidney stones should pay attention to the amount of beets they eat. They have a lot of oxalates that can crystallize and create kidney stones, so in this case you should limit the amount of beet consummation.

2. Beets contribute to gout 

Oxalates are also bad because they can create gout. When there is too much uric acid in the body, it can be harmful by causing a type of arthritis, called gout.

3. Discoloration in your urine and stool

While consuming beetroot can help you go to the bathroom, you should now that it can also discolor your urine and stool by making it red, so don’t panic, there’s nothing wrong with you, that’s perfectly normal.
