Home Remedies for the Two Main Forms of COPD

COPD is short for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is a long-standing problem that progresses, which means that it tends to worsen with the passing of time. There are certain drugs available for both chronic bronchitis and emphysema. However, these drugs are not there to cure COPD — they can only help ease the symptoms and slow down the progression or worsening of the disease. There are also some home remedies that are said to be effective in managing the unfavorable symptoms of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Some of the best ones include:

  • Ginger. This herb’s anti-inflammatory properties make it beneficial for those with chronic bronchitis as it helps ward off swelling and irritation of those bronchial tubes.
  • Turmeric. Another spice that is very good against chronic bronchitis is turmeric. Drinking a glass of warm milk with a teaspoon of turmeric dissolved in it up to 3 times a day may work wonders.
  • Eucalyptus oil. This beneficial oil has the ability to promote proper breathing. Place a few drops of it in a basin of hot water, drape a towel over the head and inhale the steam.
  • Honey. A teaspoon of honey in a cup of warm water may help in soothing irritated throat brought about by the body’s attempt to cough up excess mucus when chronic bronchitis is around.
  • Lemon juice. The regular intake of lemon juice helps supply the body with vitamin C that strengthens the immune system, thus helping to ward off infections that may arise from COPD.
  • Garlic. Someone with emphysema may count on garlic to strengthen the immune system and improve one’s general health. Consuming 2 to 3 cloves of garlic per day may help ease emphysema symptoms.
  • Licorice extract. This may be very helpful for those with emphysema as it helps ease fatigue that’s commonly associated with the type of COPD. However, this home remedy may cause an increase in blood pressure.
